Warm-Ups for English I and II September 28-30

English II Warm-Up September 28 and 29:
(1/2 page to 1 page response)
Why do you think Golding builds up the descriptions of both Ralph and Piggy in the beginning but holds off on giving the readers their names? After Ralph’s name is revealed to the reader, why does he still not reveal Piggy’s name? What is it’s significance? (Also think about it in relation to the fact that Lord of the Flies is a political allegory.)

English II Warm-Up September 30:
(1/2 page to 1 page response)
What other characters are we introduced to in the beginning of the novel? Write down their characterizations. Make predictions about who will be the leaders and followers of the group. Explain.

English I Warm-Up September 28 and 29:
(1/2 page to 1 page response):
Describe your initial responses to reading Night for the first time.
What thoughts went through your mind as you followed young Elie on his journey?
What emotional responses did reading about his experiences provoke in you? You may
include quotes and passages from the book to illustrate your point, or to illustrate how the
author responded to specific experiences. Remember: Think in terms of both critical
thinking and critical feeling. Did your emotional response change as you have reread and dissected the novel further?

English I Warm-Up September 30:
(1/2 page to 1 page response):
If you were to write a book similar to Night which would describe an event in your life (lifetime), what do you think the work would focus on? If you can’t think of anything in your life, what about an event that has occurred in you lifetime that a peer may write. What time of message would you want to get across? What would the purpose of the work be?

ENGLISH I AGENDAS for September 28-30:

ENGLISH I AGENDAS for September 28-30:
Hello B Day (Honors English I) students,
B3: After your warm-up you will start your close reading activity. Use your annotation guidelines to annotate the excerpt, then follow the instructions to complete the rest of the assignment. When you are done with your close reading activity (roughly take 30 minutes), you all will need to finish you FISHBOWL ACTIVITY. Mecca and Sophie will decide which order the remaining questions will go in and Kendall will record on her phone. After the Fishbowl activity you all will need to begin your review sheets. If you do not finish them, you will need to take them home for homework. I will post the answers to the review sheets on my website, nwsaenglishii.wordpress.com, before your class on Friday.

On Friday you all will need to go over the answers as a class after your warm-up. I will need a volunteer to help lead the class in going over answers, and why those said answers are correct. I will give you guys roughly 45 minutes to review these sheets. Once this time is up you will take your Night quiz. Remember, it is only a quiz. Do your best! I know you all will do great!
